Concord Area Humanist Group Initiated

Attention: open in a new window. | Print |

Thank you all who supported our Founding Meeting at a parishioner’s home on January 8. We had 46 come on that snowy Thursday, plus some who couldn’t make it.

We now have ten volunteers on the Steering Committee, so we are off to a good start. Below is a first stab at our program, and how it is going. Please let us know if you would like to be on our mailing list. Email Maria at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

From Humanist Manifesto III

Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without

supernaturalism, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead

ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater

good of humanity.

Program So Far

We had a successful evening of socializing, nibbling and discussion, Feb 19 at a member's home in Concord. The approximately 20 present enjoyed the meeting with wine, cheese and nibbles and plenty of lively conversation. Participants introduced themselves, describing what religion, if any, they had grown up in, and how, in many cases, they had strayed from their origins to become whatever they were now, whether it be atheist, agnostic, or something else. Good, informative discussion followed.

We then had a good Potluck Dinner, on Feb 28, at another parishioner’s home. After appetizers and socializing we had an interesting short talk on ‘What is Humanism’ by Abby Hafer from Bedford First Parish. This was followed by more socializing and then the dinner, with the 22 present sitting at two tables, in separate rooms. Independant discussions were held at each table, following successive readings of a short relevant quotation by each diner. The discussions were centered loosely on ‘What is Humanism’. Then the diners collected dessert, and grouped differently around the tables to enjoy their desserts and general socializing conversation. It was agreed we should have more potluck dinners as well as other events.

A subcommittee of the Steering Committee is continuing discussion on larger meetings for the future.

Volunteers are wanted for hosting Potlucks and Discussion Groups. These are wonderful ways of getting to know your fellow Humanists, or for find out more about Humanism. You don't need to be a Humanist to join us. If you would like to volunteer to host one of these events, please let us know what date you have in mind, what kind of meeting, and how many people you can host, and we will match you up with participants. They can be small, medium, or larger in size, depending on your choice and your home.

We are looking for hosts for evenings in March and April, and even later. Please contact Maria at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
